Mermithid (nematoda) Parasite S of Spiders and Harvestme N
نویسنده
چکیده
Nematode parasites of spiders and harvestmen are restricted to members of the family Mermithidae . A literature review shows that nematode parasitism of arachnids is worldwide and at least 5 1 species of spiders and harvestmen have been recorded as hosts of mermithid nematodes . Infected spiders have varied habits and it is postulated that two types of parasite life cycles probably exist and that the indirect life cycle (involving a paratenic host which falls prey to the arachnid) is probably th e common type .

Mermithid parasitism of Hawaiian Tetragnatha spiders in a fragmented landscape.
Hawaiian Tetragnatha spiders inhabiting small forest fragments on the Big Island of Hawaii are parasitized by mermithid nematodes. This is the first report of mermithid nematodes infecting spiders in Hawaii, and an initial attempt to characterize this host-parasite interaction. Because immature mermithids were not morphologically identifiable, a molecular identification was performed. A phyloge...

Hexamermis cathetospiculae n. sp. (Mermithidae: Nematoda), a parasite of the rice stemborer, Tryporyza incertulas (Wlk.), is described. This mermithid was observed to control the stemborer in Malaysia. It is distinguished from other members of the genus by the shape of the vagina, the nearly straight spicules, and the form of the amphids.

Strelkovimermis spiculatus n. sp. (Mermithidae: Nematoda), a parasite of the mosquito Aedes albifasciatus Mac. in Argentina, is described. Diagnostic characters of this species include a ventrally shifted mouth opening and spicules fused at the tips. The mermithid has been reared on Culex pipiens L. larvae in the laboratory.

متن کاملIncreased haemolymph osmolality suggests a new route for behavioural manipulation of Talorchestia quoyana (Amphipoda: Talitridae) by its mermithid parasite
1. Hairworms (phylum Nematomorpha) and mermithid nematodes (phylum Nematoda) have independently evolved almost identical life cycles: both parasites cause their terrestrial arthropod hosts to seek water, required for their aquatic free-living adult stage. Hairworms achieve this by altering host neurotransmitters, but the mechanisms used by mermithids remain unknown. 2. The physiological effects...
